Cameo Writing

We have been looking at this picture of a leopard lying in a tree. We have thought of every single noun, adjective, verb and adverb we could and written them in the correct box. Next we came up with a descriptive sentence. We think it sounds great and today we are going to try and write some on our own.... keep watching!

Update on our flowers...

We have looked carefully at our flowers and we have discovered that the side of the stem in the red water has drawn the water up and made that side of the flower go red. The side of the flower with the stem in the plain water has stayed white....
We didn't realise that only one side of the flower would change colour, we will keep you updated if any other changes occur.

Literacy Activity

Two groups read Green Fingers last week and in it were some experiments. Each pair chose and experiment to carry out and will be watching what happens over the next few days/weeks.  Most people chose to look at how the stem of a flower carries nutrients from the soil/water into the plant to be used as food.
We carefully split the stem of a pale flower and put one side in plain fresh water and one side in water with some red food colouring in it.
We have put them on the window sill to see what happens and will check each day.
We have a lot of different hypotheses on what might happen so we will wait and see....

The other pair decided to see how a clever a plant could be even when grown in the dark. First we have planted a kumera so we can get it to sprout. Once this has occured we will place it in a dark box with a maze like way to reach a hole where the light will come in... we will see what happens to the plant and how clever it can be.

Watch this space ....

How Popcorn Pops

How Popcorn Pops - The Wet Truth

Although popcorn kernels may look totally dry, each kernel of popcorn actually has a tiny amount of water inside it. This water is stored inside a circle of soft starch inside the kernel's hard outer surface. As the kernel heats up, the water's molecules start to move faster and get farther away from each other; this molecular expansion is the same reason water turns into steam when you boil it. As the water expands it puts pressure against the hard starch. Something's gotta give - so eventually the water pressure wins out and the popcorn ruptures. The soft starch inside becomes inflated and bursts, flipping the kernel inside out to release the steam inside! Mmmm, popcorn!

Did U Know?
  • Don't freeze popcorn or keep it in the fridge. This dries out your kernels and without moisture there won't be any poppin'.

Our sweet afternoon

This afternoon we looked at how many teaspoons of sugar we could get to dissolve in a cup of cold then hot water. (we found out that a can of fizzy drink can have 8 teaspoons of sugar in it which is an awful lot.)
We stirred in each teaspoon until the sugar was fully dissolved then added the next. Most tables managed to get 11 or 12 teaspoons of sugar in the cold water before it stopped dissolving. We even had a little sip and boy it was sickly sweet.

WOOHOO

As the sign says....It's over! Well done to everyone who took part or sponsored someone else throughout the last 40 hours. Your efforts are so appreciated and yes.... YOU ROCK!!
Now it's time to get life back to normal and start collecting in your sponsorship money...the quicker we can get it in the quicker we can get it to the people of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.
Again.... THANK YOU

This weekend many of you are joining in the 40 hour famine to help raise money for the people of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. Botany Downs Primary has about 80 students joining in which is an awesome achievement.
If someone you know is going hard out for the hungry give them lots of support and encouragement as they are really helping to raise not only money but awareness of the needs of other countries.
If you are going without something for 20 or 40 hours keep at it and be proud of your actions.
Some people are giving up food, eletronics, furniture, talking, phones for 20 or 40 hours....
HOW AWESOME :-)

This year there are 4 teams you can join so I hope you picked a good one.
